چکیده

A questionnaire-based survey was distributed to OIE Member Countries to assess the role of veterinarians in contemporary food safety risk management, particularly at the level of livestock producers. Almost all countries reported that food safety was a priority public health issue, and veterinarians in animal health authorities, food safety authorities, private practice, academia and industry all provided essential inputs. Evidence of systematic application of a generic framework for managing food-borne risks was sporadic. Veterinarians involved in making risk-based decisions will increasingly have to work within multidisciplinary teams, and food safety regulatory reform in a number of countries is providing new opportunities and responsibilities. The study revealed marked differences in the range and intensity of food safety programmes in different countries, including the extent of veterinary involvement. At the level of international standard setting, developing countries were markedly less represented than developed countries.
